Our cars become such an important part of our lives that it’s nice to have a nickname for them. If you’re a car addict like me, you might be using it more often than some of your friends and family.
Sometimes, the name just comes to you, but other times it’s helpful to have some inspiration. That’s where I come in. I’ve surveyed UK readers of Auto Adviser to find out just what nicknames they’ve given their vehicles and shared everything in this complete guide.
Tips for Naming Your Car
So, where should you begin when naming your car? It’s nice to have something that matches the personality of the vehicle. For example, you’re not going to name your turquoise Honda Jazz ‘Knight Rider’ just as you probably don’t want to name a black Ford Mustang ‘Bumblebee’.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Names based on colours – The colour plays a key role in the ‘personality’ of your vehicle, for example, ‘Shadow’ for a black car or ‘Chalky’ for a white car. Later in the article, I provide some name recommendations for different vehicle colours.
- Names based on make/model – Some models lend themselves nicely to a nickname. For example, you could name your Renault Megane ‘Megan’ or your Subaru Impreza ‘Scooby Doo’. However, sometimes it’s nice to go against the grain anyway.
- Names based on your reg plate – Naturally, the number plate is a good place to find some inspiration. For example, I called my first vehicle ‘The Cub’ due to its number plate ending in CUB.
- Famous cars – I’ve already mentioned Knight Rider, but there are plenty of other famous vehicles for inspiration such as ‘Lightning McQueen’ or ‘General Lee’. I’ve listed more famous cars in the final section of this guide.
